This Day in History

1920: Nineteenth Amendment To The Constitution ratified giving women the right to vote.
1923: West Coast Produce Co Inc. (later to become Harbor Wholesale Foods) is founded by Carl V. Erickson in Aberdeen, WA.
1924: The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held.
1926: John Logie Baird conducts the first public demonstration of a television.
1928: Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin.
1929: The Wall Street Crash of 1929 started the period of The Great Depression.

This Day in History

1930: West Coast Produce Co. Inc. moves to a 5,000 sq. ft. building in Aberdeen, WA.
1931: US suffers worst ever drought in its history, leading to the Dust Bowl years.
1934: Due to poverty around the world, political extremism including Fascism, Nazism, and extreme Communism gains followers.
1935: The United States Social Security Act is signed into law.
1936: Jesse Owens wins 4 Gold medals at the Berlin Olympics.
1937: Amelia Mary Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean during a circumnavigation flight attempt.
1938: Orson Welles' radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds is broadcast.
1939: Germany attacks Poland starting World War II.

This Day in History

1940's: The second generation, Carl R. Erickson and Jim Erickson join the family business
1940: Germany invades Denmark, Norway, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands during World War II.
1942: The draft age in the United States is lowered from 21 to 18.
1944: Operation Overlord (D-Day) sees 150,000 Allied troops successfully storm the beaches of Normandy.
1945: World War II ends as Allied and Soviet forces take Germany, and Japan surrenders following atomic bombs.
1948: Israel is created as an independent Jewish state.
1949: NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is established.
